Craig Nierman mediates and arbitrates complex insurance, tort, and healthcare claims.

His quarter-century of litigation experience includes representing plaintiffs and defendants—including hospitals, individuals and families, insurers, domestic and international businesses, as well as government entities—in jury trials, appeals, and arbitrations.

His insurance experience includes:

  • First party (e.g., commercial, health, property, and life) claims;
  • Third party (e.g., wrongful death, injury, professional negligence, business, products liability, * employment, and property) cases;
  • Extracontractual damages;
  • Agent/broker errors and omissions;
  • ERISA;
  • Subrogation; and
  • Carrier/producer disputes.

His health law practice has involved complex reimbursement and revenue cycle issues (e.g., experimental, medical necessity, and exclusion questions), medical malpractice and devices, primary and secondary payor conflicts, provider contracts, and HIPAA compliance.

He previously taught Insurance Law as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Iowa College of Law. Prior to law school, he managed litigation and claims in multiple jurisdictions for a Fortune 50 insurer.

Craig has published on the psychological aspects of mediation and insurance arbitration; the business law textbook he co-authored is in its third edition. He has spoken at national and international legal forums including those hosted by the American Bar Association, American Arbitration Association, law schools, and law enforcement agencies.

The American Arbitration Association as well as the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) have named Craig to their national panel of arbitrators. He belongs to the following:

Martindale-Hubbell awarded him its “AV Preeminent” peer review rating. He earned degrees from the University of California, Davis (B.A., 1990) and the University of Iowa (J.D. with high distinction, 1999).

Craig married his high school sweetheart; they have two adult children. He enjoys time with his family and friends, learning new things, and exercising, especially kayaking.
